forming a sustainable music ministry

clarity.
Formation.
Faithful leadership.

I work with churches over a 12 month season to strengthen music ministry systems, deepen culture, and develop leaders so that ministries are sustainable, theologically grounded, and life-giving.

The Challenge

many music ministries are full of willing people - but rely on a few leaders holding everything together.

Common signs:

  • Unclear expectations

  • Inconsistent preparation

  • Leader fatigue

  • Difficulty onboarding new musicians

  • Strong musicianship without shared formation

The solution

  • The Diagnostic

    Every coaching season begins with a comprehensive diagnostic.

    Using two surveys -
    one ministry-wide and one for individuals -
    we assess:

    * Systems & structures

    * Culture & Formation

    * Musical Practice

    * Leadership sustainability

    This provides a clear picture of where the ministry currently sits - and where it needs to grow.

  • What the diagnostic reveals

    * The current stages of development

    * Strengths to protect

    * Fragilities limiting growth

    * Risks if nothing changes

    * A clear pathway to the next stage

    THE STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT

    Ad hoc: Reactive and person-dependent

    Basic: Some structure, inconsistent practice

    Functional: Sustainable but leader-heavy

    Intentional: Developing people and leaders

    Embedded: Culture-driven and multiplying

How I work with churches

Over 12 months, I partner with leaders to:

  • Clarify theology and purpose

  • Build systems that serve people

  • Develop leaders who pastor musicians

  • Embed culture that lasts beyond individuals

    This is not so much about doing more - it’s about forming better foundations.

  • This 12 month program works with individuals or very small groups of music ministry leaders to develop their gifts.
    Each month’s 1-2-1 session covers a new topic, follows up on current skills development, troubleshoots arising issues, and provides encouragement and accountability.
    Topics included are prioritised based on individual needs and context. Topics include:

    • Band Leading

    • Song Leading

    • Song selection and repertoire

    • Auditions and Onboarding

    • Rostering Systems

    • Developing Others’ Gifts

    • Team Culture

      Content is decided with input from church leadership, mentor and mentee.
      Progress reports are included at 6 months and 12 months.
      Sample content is available on request.

  • A series of band workshops designed to embed a healthy culture of rehearsals, teamwork, gift stewardship and service, all within the motivating and guiding framework of gift stewardship. Practical skills in this area are not learnt in one off workshops but over several sessions where volunteers learn to function together as a band that becomes greater than the sum of the parts.

  • This workshop provides electric guitarists with a clear and practical knowledge of the building blocks of electric guitar parts. A pre-workshop survey ensures the attendees all receive relevant Next Steps for their development.
    An additional feature is the inclusion of a timetable and plan for encouragement and accountability for those in attendance into the future. This workshop facilitates a healthy team culture of mutual encouragement and mentoring.

  • Christmas and Easter are two of the busiest times for church musicians. I can coach inexperienced leaders, guest band lead, provide clear arrangements for bands and help take the stress out of Advent and Lent for your key volunteers.

    Church Weekends Away are also busy and potentially stretching for musicians. Support key leaders with mentoring for all of these types events, so they are trained and grown for the future, thus avoiding burnout and ensuring successful special events also become key development pathways.
